Pipe
Wyes

Pipe
wyes are used to to allow one pipe to join another pipe at some degree
or angle. As the name suggests, the pipe wyes are Y-shaped pipe fitting
devices. They are a popular type of pipe fitting used in various
industrial applications.
Pipe wyes and pipe tees:
Pipe wyes are similar to pipe tees. The only difference is in that the
branch line is angled to reduce friction which could hamper the flow.
The pipe connection is typically at a 45-degree angle rather than a
usual 90-degree angle. If a branch turns out at the end to be
perpendicular to the through line, the pipe fitting becomes a "tee
wye".
Buying Tips Certain factors that are to be considered for
the purchase of pipe wyes are as follows:
- Pipe and Tube Sizes
- Wall Thickness
- Materials
- Degree of Branch: 30, 45, and 60
- Finishing
- Durability
- Corrosion resistant

Materials used:
There are various materials used in the making of wyes. They are as
follows:
- Carbon steel
- Stainless steel
- Iron
- Copper
- Monel
- Nickel
- Titanium
- Zirconium
- Plastic
- Rubber etc.
Various shapes of pipe wyes:
The pipe wyes (in the form of Y) can take various shapes. Below we give
a diagrammatic representation of some pipe wyes.
Standard Pipe Wye |
Compact Pipe Wye |
Special Pipe Wye |
As seen in the above figures, the first one is a standard pipe wye,
exactly in the shape of the alphabet Y in a horizontal
position. The second is a pipe wye in a vertical position with three
branches. The third one is a special type of pipe wye in the shape of a
standard tee with a 45° bend and particularly recommended to be
used in large-diameter piping.
